What Is Biofeedback?
Biofeedback is a process in which a person learns to reliably influence bodily or physiological responses that are not ordinarily under voluntary control. Through the use of instrumentation, representations of events taking place inside the body are provided outside the body and are displayed on a computer monitor, which makes their perception possible. Once perceived in this manner, the opportunity for control of these events occurs. Biofeedback is usually used to relax or calm a person, i.e., to quiet nervous system activity.
What Is Biofeedback Used For?
Biofeedback can be useful successfully in treating emotional and physical disorders that involve stress or arousal of the sympathetic nervous system. Problems such as anxiety, phobia, panic, and insomnia are responsive to this type of treatment. Conditions including hypertension, headaches, chronic pain, Raynaud's disease, TMJ, irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, ADDH, and ulcers are treated adjunctively, in collaboration with a patient's primary care physician. Biofeedback and relaxation training can also be effective in alleviating the side effects of necessary medical treatment such as radiation and chemotherapy. Treatment is usually of a short duration and results in the gaining of a skill. Like riding a bicycle, once learned, this skill is available indefinitely.
